Catalog Fundraising – Sixth Grade Camp

Every year, Sixth Grade and Eighth Grade participate in catalog sales to raise money for Sixth Grade Camp and Graduation events, respectively. The profit from our sales goes towards individual Sixth Grade Camp balances – the more your child sells, the less you have to pay for camp :).

Online access for our catalog fundraising can be found here. If your child is collecting money/checks & paper orders, the order form and money envelope are due to me on the morning of Friday, September 7th.

Jogathon – October 12th, 2018 – “Americana” —> Online donation

THIS WEEK….

We’ve started our fundraising for camp – any paper orders should be turned in the classroom on Friday, September 7. Better yet, try out the online sales!

A few forms that might still be floating around your child’s backpack or binder…

  • School Calendar and Handbook (sign and return by Friday, September 7)
  • Jog-A-Thon Information and T-Shirt Orders (orders due Friday, August 31)

Reading/Language Arts: We are wrapping up our summer reading by writing a book review on one of the books read over summer. In addition, we’ll be focusing heavily on how to read informational text, using our text books as our main examples. During the first couple weeks of school, we’ll explore how the different features in each text aids in understanding of the content and various strategies to comprehend the material presented (note-taking skills).

We’ll also be starting our first unit in our Vocab book. Vocabulary and spelling both come from the same book. Normally, sixth grade will have a both spelling test and a vocabulary test on every Friday. However, to ease them into this book (it is a big jump from Fifth), this first unit will take us two weeks, as we are learning how to properly complete the book work and independent spelling menus. Vocab and Spelling Unit 1A tests are scheduled for Friday, 9/7.

Grammar this week focuses on sentences and the difference between subject & predicates.

Math: Our number systems unit focuses on using the place value system to recognize patterns, create relationships between numbers, and establishing generalizations (rules/properties) for operations with whole numbers and decimals. Please note that while a cumulative test will not be given until after the end of the unit, I will give smaller quizzes throughout the next few weeks (look out for the notice in your child’s homework planner or on the homework page of the class site).

This week, we’re focusing on divisibility, prime & composite numbers, and place value of whole numbers & decimals. The class will also be assigned a math project towards the end of this week, which will be due next Friday, Sept.7.

Religion: We are starting our exploration of the Old Testament by exploring the different ways God reveals his self to us. This week, we will explore the various ways God has revealed His self through creation (including us as humans).

Social Studies: Our first Social Studies unit (Origins) focuses on the origins of civilization. We will study the development of hunter-gatherer societies and discover how the first cities and civilizations formed. This week, we are exploring the use of artifacts to investigate early human life and the skills hunter-gatherer societies developed to survive.

Art: We’ll be working with the elements of color and line this week. We should start our first project on Friday.
