A FEW NOTES FROM ME
Quick Reminder Re: Campus Safety & Arrival
In an effort to make our campus as secure and safe as possible, we are limited the amount of entrances we have in the school during arrival.
All students arriving before 7:40 should report to Morning Care, which opens at 7:00am. If you arrive on campus between 7:00 – 7:40 am, please enter the school through Mercy Hall on Ibis Street. The gates on Fort Stockton and Hawk will open at 7:40 and close shortly after the morning bells ring (the sliding gate closest the school office will remain open the end of morning assembly).
If you arrive between 8:15 – 8:30, Ms. Georgia will let you in through the parish office (Welcome Center).
Summer Unplugged – Back to School Social
Join St. Vincent School’s Class of 2019 this Friday evening on the black top for a night of food and fun to kick off the school year! Catch up with friends in our beer garden while your kids enjoy some cotton candy and have a shot at the Dunk Tank to soak their favorite teacher (I know some Sixth Graders are excited for the chance to dunk Ms. C…)! Enter our Chili Cook-off or have a taste and judge the best for yourself! Music will energize the night and end with Karaoke that is sure to entertain us all!
Tickets to enter are $12 for adults and $8 for children. Tickets include a visit to food stations for pizza, sliders, hot dogs and kebobs. Purchase additional tickets for $5 beer/wine, $5 dunk tank (2 shots), $3 cotton candy, $1 soft drinks/bottled water. You can purchase tickets here or look for flyers in the school office.
Catalog Fundraising – Sixth Grade Camp
Every year, Sixth Grade and Eighth Grade participate in catalog sales to raise money for Sixth Grade Camp and Graduation events, respectively. The profit from our sales goes towards individual Sixth Grade Camp balances – the more your child sells, the less you have to pay for camp :).
Online access for our catalog fundraising can be found here. If your child is collecting money/checks & paper orders, the order form and money envelope are due to me in the morning this Friday.
Jogathon – October 12th, 2018 – “Americana” —> Online donation

THIS WEEK….
Last week for our catalog sales to bring in money for Sixth Grade camp!!! Any paper orders should be turned in the classroom on Friday, September 7. Better yet, try out the online sales!
If you have not signed the School Calendar and Handbook, it needs to be returned to school by Friday, September 7 – thanks!
Reading/Language Arts: We’ll be working on publishing our book review on one of the books read over summer – practicing our typing skills and learning how Ms. C expects format of papers. In addition, we’re continuing to read informational text, using our text books as our main examples. During the first couple weeks of school, we’ll explore how the different features in each text aids in understanding of the content and various strategies to comprehend the material presented (note-taking skills).
We’re finishing our first unit in our Vocab book. Vocab and Spelling Unit 1A tests are scheduled for Friday, 9/7.
Grammar this week focuses on sentence fragments, run-ons, and the use of verbs & nouns. We will have a quiz coming up shortly, so please keep an eye out in your child’s homework planner for the date.
Math: Our number systems unit focuses on using the place value system to recognize patterns, create relationships between numbers, and establishing generalizations (rules/properties) for operations with whole numbers and decimals. Please note that while a cumulative test will not be given until after the end of the unit, I will give smaller quizzes throughout the next few weeks (look out for the notice in your child’s homework planner or on the homework page of the class site).
This week, we’re reviewing place value, different ways to write numbers (word form, expanded form, standard form), and the use of exponents. The class has also been assigned a “Special Number” project, which is due Friday, Sept.7.
Religion: We are starting our exploration of the Old Testament by exploring the different ways God reveals his self to us. This week, we are continuing to build on the idea of God revealing His self to us through the sacred Scriptures. We will start looking through the Bible and discussing how the Word of God is organized (and how to find particular books and verses in the Bible).
Social Studies: Our first Social Studies unit (Origins) focuses on the origins of civilization. We will study the development of hunter-gatherer societies and discover how the first cities and civilizations formed.
Art: We’re continuing to work on elements of line and color. We also have our first art history lesson with Ms. Diana this Friday afternoon – so excited!
