THIS WEEK….
I’m still missing a few School Calendar/Handbook signatures – please sign and turn in to the classroom ASAP!!!
Reading/Language Arts: We’re finishing our first reading/writing assignment with the publication of our book reviews. We’ll also be starting our unit on the elements that make up a story, uses short stories from our Prentice Hall Literature book as our primary texts. We’ll be using a graphic of story mountain to identify a story’s exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. In addition, we’ll start identifying and discussing the idea of theme within literature.
A reminder that we’re kicking it up a notch in Vocabulary & Spelling – our units will now be a week-long study. Unit 2 tests will be on Friday, 9/14.
Grammar this week focuses the use of verbs & nouns. We will have a quiz coming up shortly, so please keep an eye out in your child’s homework planner for the date.
Math: Our number systems unit focuses on using the place value system to recognize patterns, create relationships between numbers, and establishing generalizations (rules/properties) for operations with whole numbers and decimals. Please note that while a cumulative test will not be given until after the end of the unit, I will give smaller quizzes throughout the next few weeks (look out for the notice in your child’s homework planner or on the homework page of the class site).
This week, we’re reviewing the use of exponents and starting to delve into operations with decimals.
Religion: We will be continuing our investigation of the Old Testament by exploring the book of Genesis and the story of Creation. We’ll be exploring the symbolism used by the biblical writers to show how God is the creator of all things and that we as humans are created in His image and likeness.
Social Studies: Our first Social Studies unit (Origins) focuses on the origins of civilization. We will study the development of hunter-gatherer societies and discover how the first cities and civilizations formed.
Art: We’re continuing to work on elements of line and color – it’s taken us a little longer to start a project than I had hoped, but we’re busy at work on a piece inspired by Piet Mondrian, using a limited color palette and our new knowledge of lines.
