#CSW2019
Catholic Schools Week 2019 is almost upon us! This is our week to celebrate the opportunity we have to grow in our faith and to show appreciation for all the people who make our school wonderful. We have a lot of events coming up for the week, starting with Family Mass this Sunday, 1/27 at 8:45 AM. Students should be in formal dress uniform. I will post a list of all of next week’s events later this week.

Open House 2/2
We will be holding an Open House on Saturday, Feb 2, 9-11 AM. Please share the news with prospective parents. Classrooms will be open, and teachers will be available. We will also have school tours.

Field Trip 2/7 – San Diego Symphony
We need a couple more drivers for our upcoming field trip to the San Diego Symphony. Please let me know if you’d be able to join us (or drop off/pick up a carpool). Many thanks in advance!

Valentine’s Day
If your child is planning on distributing goodies or cards for Valentine’s Day, please note that there should be enough for the entire class. We have 26 kids total in 6th grade.

Candy Grams
Student Council will be hosting a candy gram sale, starting next Monday. Candy grams are $1 each or 3 for $1/50. Flyers/order forms will be sent home next week. Orders from parents or family members welcome!

Don’t forget – your child can play Prodigy at home to practice math skills! It’s a fun, interactive game that helps build math skills and is geared to your child’s individual level and needs!

THIS WEEK….

Reading/Language Arts:

Vocab – Vocab 11A this week – we will have a test on Friday.

We are finalizing our essays for Catholic Schools Week – final drafts are due to Ms. C on Wednesday 1/23.

Reading: We will be reading excerpts from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and “I Have a Dream” speech to explore the purpose of persuasive writing and techniques used by Dr. King.

For Grammar this week, we are differentiating between phrases & clauses and identifying direct objects.

Math: Continuing our unit on equations and expressions. This week, we are jumping into solving for one-step algebraic equations.

Religion: This week, we are jumping into an exploration of the Israelites as a conquering people – we will be looking at the fall of Jericho, the division of the tribes of Israel, and the judges who governed on behalf of God.

Social Studies: We are finishing our unit on Ancient Israel. It is important to note that, while many of the ideas we will encounter in this chapter are also reflected in our religious text, we are looking at the Israelites and Judaism through a historian’s lenses – how religion has shaped the culture and group of people know as the Israelites. We’ll also be exploring how laws and beliefs intertwine.
